James Zheng, Goettsch Partners

What has been the highlight of the year for your office?

We received two big recognitions this year: GP was named the AIA Chicago Firm of the Year, and our Sowwah Square project in Abu Dhabi won the CTBUH 2013 Best Tall Building Award for the Middle East & Africa. In Asia, our newly expanded office opened in July, and we won a few commissions in the region for large, multi-building complexes.

What shifts/trends have you witnessed in the global market in 2013?

Demand for design services is still strong in Asia, particularly in China. The U.S. commercial market is showing signs of life too, with of a steady return from the financial crisis.

What are your predictions for the AEC industry in 2014?

This coming year will be a good one for the industry. The Middle East will start showing signs of recovery, and work in the U.S. and Asia will continue to grow.

Where would your ultimate festive getaway be?

I have always wanted to go to New Zealand, no matter the time of year.

What design present would you most like to receive this year?

A Wacom Inkling. It’s a fantastic tool that converts hand drawings into digital files.
