WAN had the privilege to attend the annual fundraiser Forum Fest 2013 at Inner-City Arts in downtown Los Angeles, hosted by the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design. This special event celebrated the best and brightest of the Los Angeles architecture community and this year honoured Michael Maltzan, FAIA.
Michel Maltzan is the founder and design principal of Michael Maltzan Architecture, Inc. in Los Angeles. Emerging from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and the offices of Machado and Silvetti Associates and Frank Gehry, Maltzan has built a firm and voice with an international reputation.
Now being built all over the globe, the work of his office began with and continues to engage Los Angeles with an urbanistic and social specificity rooted in the question of How do we live here?
Championing the beauty of geometry and the complexity of formalism, Maltzan has developed an exceptionally broad-based collection of projects that serve the entire community and city of Los Angeles by addressing underserved populations and needs at the highest level. Bringing the art of architecture to commonplace programs and neighbourhoods, his projects complement Los Angeles’s grittiness and extend the thinking of architecture through the ingenuity of his design.
Inner-City Art's base was designed by Maltzan and has been a very influential project in Los Angeles. This learning oasis in the heart of LA's Skid Row created fluent engagement between all guests and the artistic environment, which positively effects the lives of homeless, inner-city children, improving their chances to lead productive and successful lives by developing their creativity, expanding learning skills and building self-confidence.
WAN celebrated Michael’s success alongside many other guests including AECOM, ARUP, Synthesis Design + Architecture, DSH Architecture. There was also an opportunity to be part of Silent Auction featuring original drawings by honouree Michael Maltzan and other notable LA architects such as Tom Wiscombe, Marcello Spina / Georina Huljich, Larry Scarpa / Angela Brooks, Peter Zellner, Predock Frane, Patrick Tighe, Lorcan O’Herlihy, Kevin Daley, Michael Lehrer, Steven Ehrlich and Glen Lynn plus prints by internationally-acclaimed photographer Iwan Baan.
