New Sports and Events Centre adds boost to small community of Tokoroa, New Zealand

Bossley Architects in conjunction with Argon Construction have completed a new sports and events centre in Tokoroa, New Zealand. The project is the result of a the partnership's winning entry to a design-build competition and comprises three main spaces which are externally articulated in the design, linked by subservient spaces which are located under a lower roof.

The complex is within a 32 hectare collection of sports fields and sits alongside a historic and slightly sunken rugby field. The new building is located and designed to reinforce the bowl of the existing field. The Centre houses a 1,480 sq m Courts Arena, a 500 sq m multi-purpose Gymnasium, and 300 sq m double meeting room facility.

The complex was designed to a very tight budget - effectively $1,300 per sq m - and completed more than a month ahead of schedule, within its $5m budget. It is already heavily booked well into the future. In his opening speech, His Worship the Mayor, Neil Sinclair congratulated the team on the vision of the design, economic efficiency and speed of construction.

“It is a significant tribute to Bossley Architects, and the individual architects involved, that the events centre we have now opened is virtually unaltered from what they originally proposed (in the design competition). They went out of their way to accommodate the small alterations that were suggested,” explains South Waikato Council CEO, David Hall
