Finnish firm wins purchase prize for Aurinkokivi School competition entry

Architects Rudanko + Kankkunen Ltd's design was awarded for its inspiring architecture and child-friendly spaces in the design of a futuristic school in Finland. The Helsinki-based firm’s entry is entitled Tivoli.

Covering an area of 9,000 sq m, the project won a purchase prize for its ‘inspiring architecture and child-friendly spaces’ with the jury commenting that the design had a ‘magical atmosphere both in outdoor and indoor spaces’.

The scheme, which is situated in the Aurinkokivi area of Vantaa, is imaginative and in-keeping with the need to inspire creativity in children with the architects stating that ‘art and self-motivated learning are present both in the school’s curriculum and the architecture’. The traditional gabled building wings are joined together to create an interesting composition within the building.

These wings contain the classrooms and learning spaces for nursery and school-age children, with each class having its own separate entrance together with a group lobby and flexible classrooms and playrooms surrounding it. Away from the wings, the central areas are the location for group activities, sports, arts and spontaneous learning with vibrant colours and decorations in the communal spaces.

Rudanko + Kankkunen Ltd said of the design: “The building is mostly on one level and can be realised with repeating construction elements. It is designed to be inexpensive to build, yet highly inspiring. It is a very realisable solution, which we always aim at. Our goal is to provide inspiring spaces that are easy to build, easy to understand and fun to dwell in.”

The Finnish practice had previously designed a vocational school and community centre in Sra Pou, Cambodia, and also submitted a design proposal for a new school complex in the Suurpelto district of Espoo, Finland in 2012.
