The transformation of the Old Municipal Market on Circus Street in Brighton, UK has recently taken a step forward with the selection of the architect's shedkm to design this unique mixed-use space. In partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council, the University of Brighton and South East Dance, Cathedral Group PLC are pushing ahead with the £100m plan to create one of the most sustainable communities in the UK.
The design features a central public plaza which acts as the focal point for the rest of the development. Within the complex there will be 200 new homes, 3,000 sq m of commercial space and 1,200 sq m of retail, café and restaurant space; all of which create around 170 new jobs in Brighton & Hove and is predicted to inject around £150m into the local economy within the next decade.
The Deputy leader of Brighton & Hove City Council Phélim Mac Cafferty has commented: "The appointment of architects heralds a turning point and underlines the commitment to create a sustainable development that will bring housing and jobs, as well as arts and education opportunities."
Located just off Grande Parade at the heart of Brighton City Centre, the site area covers 1.8 acres and has been left as unused space for a prolonged period of time. In 2006 Cathedra Group PLC were selected by the local council to develop the site as it holds such potential in regenerating Brighton & Hove's city spaces and economy.
"We want to deliver a beautifully designed, highly sustainable scheme, which will reinvigorate this part of the city centre, capture the spirit of Brighton and contribute to the growth of the city socially, culturally and economically," details Richard Upton, Cathedral Group Plc Chief Executive.
In addition, the new development will provide support directly to the University of Brighton and South East Dance. For the university it will deliver a new library, teaching and resources centre with the addition of new accommodation for around 400 students.
South East Dance will benefit from a new dedicated space with the addition of associated offices. It will provide not only a new home for the organisation but also create a cultural hub for the area.

Until work begins on site the site is currently being used for short term installations including a pop up market which promotes the local creative industries within Brighton and the surrounding areas. This is just one of the stages where sustainability has been embedded into the development with the overall aim of achieving an Excellent BREEAM rating.
