MCM Architecture has completed a surprising project for the Canary Wharf office of risk solutions provider, Algorithmics, an IBM company.

Algorithmics, an award winning provider of enterprise risk management software, which has recently been acquired by IBM, was keen to use its relocation from five floors of city workspace to a single floor at 30, North Colonnade, Canary Wharf, to redefine the workspace to reflect its position as an industry thought leader and align itself more closely with its company values of innovation, intelligent foresight and approachability. In short, Algorithmics did not want its new workplace to look like just another corporate office.

‘Think New York loft' was the advice given in an early briefing session. MCM did not need to be asked twice. From the moment you arrive on Algorithmics floor, you can sense the difference: The bleached oak floorboards, the slatted ceiling and kinetic art pieces all prepare you for a very different experience. The sparse reception, with its variety of seating types, flows seamlessly into the main client entertainment space which comprises of a huge open ‘veranda' with fabulous views across to the Olympic Park. This veranda, which is used as a client entertainment space, has been created by pulling the conference rooms themselves back from the building perimeter. These rooms, with fully glazed fronts, softened by loose-weave drapes, look out to the Olympic Park from across the veranda which is subdivided laterally by open screens and bookcases and furnished in a variety of styles creating very much a hotel lobby feel. An open coffee bar at the far end provides guests with refreshment and itself becomes an informal meeting destination and breakout space for the technology training suite adjacent.

The predominantly open plan team spaces, which incorporate areas of hot desking, are serviced by a variety of collaboration spaces and quiet working zones which are clustered around the building's core, culminating at the far end of the building in the floor hub - a café breakout area with associated enclosed meeting spaces which is the heart of the organization's team workspace. Again, the look and the feel of this space is completely different from that of a conventional office.

The furniture configurations, and particularly the lighting, create a relaxed but buzzy atmosphere and the rich variety of spaces provides you with the perfect place to work, whatever it is you happen to be doing. The whole space has proved to be a great success with both Algorithmics staff and their visitors.

The new office has become a real talking point, engaging and motivating everyone who works there, and really reinforcing those brand values.
