Pinsent Masons, one of the UK's top 15 law firms needed to consolidate its London operations from three separate locations into one headquarters building.
The new building was to become a flagship headquarters that would take the firm into the future by encouraging truly collaborative cross practice group, cross sector and cross office working methods. It would also provide state-of-the-art audio visual equipment for industry leading presentations that position Pinsent Masons as leaders in the field as well as effective client-facing meeting and conference facilities that reflect the company brand values and their quality of service.
The new office space was to reflect the firm's confidence and its ambitions, while providing a modern and flexible workplace for the 21st century at an appropriate cost. Research conducted by the Project Steering Committee indicated that a move to open plan offices would substantially support their drive for improved communication and collaboration.
MCM designed Pinsent Mason's new space as a quality fit-out without looking ostentatious. For the meeting and conference space, MCM created a memorable client experience that is efficient, flexible and effective. The dramatic 3-storey helical staircase linking the floors required extensive structural works and provides a focal point from the client reception and business lounge. Visitors are quickly processed at ground floor level and either directed to the adjacent auditorium, which is used for internal and hosted events, or directed to the aforementioned client reception on the 15th floor.
The working floors benefit from relatively small floor plates that achieve a sense of place, avoiding a great sea of desks. Glass diving screens break up sightlines and create team areas. Staff amenities such as tea points, wellbeing facilities and breakout hubs create destinations with the 7th floor conceived as ‘The Hub' providing staff catering, which can be used during core hours and as informal meeting areas at other times. A roof terrace provides al fresco dining in the summer months.
The 1st floor level provides other shared facilities such as a print room, a comprehensive training suite and a series of case rooms for external visitors. The various destinations throughout the working floor and the building have purposefully stimulated people movement to create a truly creative environment that actively delivers a collegiate and collaborative work space while providing flexibility for future changes in workforce numbers.
In support of Pinsent Mason's sustainability initiatives, the building features extensive renewable energy/energy saving systems including a large photovoltaic roof array, covering the multi-storey plant areas, and ground source heat pump system providing seasonal cooling and heating to the main reception.
The new workspace has succeeded in establishing working practices fit for the 21st century while conveying Pinsent Masons' confidence and ambitions as one of the top law firms in London and the UK.
