Spain's recent hospitals, as part of the health care systems efficiently serve the citizens, but they do so, the architect contends, in an unnecessarily dramatic and sometimes even depressive architectural space. Its proven efficiency is often the cause of their repetitiveness, so that over the last quarter of a century they are almost all alike, or at least perceived to be so.
Rafael de la Hoz Architects propose to transform the citizen into a client, for a new type of hospital which, in addition to assisting the proven effectiveness of the healthcare system, he can feel at all times to be the centre of all care and all attention. The concept is based on demographic, socio-economic structures and formulas for effective care, management and organisation. This proposed new Hospital model therefore uses three basic elements - efficiency, light and silence - combining the best of hospital architecture and the best of residential architecture. This architecture therefore corresponds to the complex requirements of the program as well as economic necessities.
Conceptually, the new hospital is arranged on a base that houses the medical clinics, outpatient units, diagnosis and treatment. The base is structured in three modules or parallel buildings connected with 4 bridges reflecting the best of hospital matrix structures, flexibility, expansion, functional clarity and horizontal circulations. Here we see in detail how emergency, radiology and outpatient care are related. Next to it a diagram of the relationship between emergency and intensive care units and below the spatial links between emergency, operating rooms and intensive care units.
To prevent the hospital from resembling a 'built space program', we responded to the complex functional program with attractive, contemporary architecture. She is particularly taking people with their need for light, and protection as a yardstick - especially in the inpatient areas - which honour both patients and their related parties who are on their way to their loved ones. Yet the two organic volumes are already visible from a distance as a signpost on the highway. Two functional concepts of space, base and crown, which are linked to form a new architecture; a model that offers professionals the opportunity to treat and citizens to be treated in an environment where the natural light and silence result in a therapeutic effect.
