This sensitive project comprises a new addition to a Grade II listed Victorian school building in a conservation area, yet provides a contrast of old and new. The project enhances the beauty of the existing Victorian school building and adds modern flexible teaching spaces to complement the existing classrooms. This compact inner city site has a lack of outdoor space; this proposal adds a multi-storey new build teaching extension, increasing the outdoor space. The new facility provides a large mix of teaching and learning spaces all wrapped around a four storey daylit teaching atrium, with a roof top science garden and play area.
The new element wraps around the rear of the existing Victorian school providing a new build library and breakout spaces in the centre of the existing building, this provides a vibrant centre to the building as well as totally uplifts the dilapidated rear elevation of the school. The Victorian building will also undergo a full internal refurbishment and will provide access for all. The concept of our proposal is to create a strong contrast between the existing and the new buildings, whilst at the same time paying respect to the Grade II listed building.
The selection of a dark colour metric brick for the new facades, provide a juxtaposition to the local vernacular of London stock bricks yet sits comfortably within the character of the conservation area. The new element as a counterpoint to the Victorian building is separated by a large glazed box providing a new dramatic entrance to the school.
Its composition based on the rhythm of the adjacent terrace houses completes its contextual juxtaposition creating a coherent yet modern urban piece. The window pattern is generated by its orientation, internal function and the location of the existing trees (allowing large window openings without the internal heat gains). The full height windows will provide the feeling of sitting within the trees.
