Victorian character in the heart of London: Dexter Moren Associates rejuvinate Grade II listed building into timeless boutique hotel.
The Mornington Hotel is a Grade II listed building located in Lancaster Gate. Since 2009 the hotel has undergone a significant refurbishment designed to modernise the property into a timeless boutique hotel whilst retaining its period Victorian features.
The design concept by Dexter Moren Associates aims to rejuvenate the hotel and inject wit, charm and character into the building. The concept is based on creating a ‘country gentleman’s pied â terre’ through the satirical use of fabrics, pin stripes, herringbone, and elements such as the open fireplace and dark wood finishes. As is often the case in the refurbishment of historic buildings, a significant proportion of work has been carried out on ‘behind the scene’ upgrades, designed to bring the hotel into the 21st century.
The most significant attribute is the introduction of air conditioning and heating to provide a much more comfortable environment for guests. By executing the refurbishment programme over a series of phases the hotel has remained in operation throughout. The remodelled Reception creates a sophisticated and relaxed setting whilst retaining and restoring original Victorian features such as the dark wood panelling. Wing back chairs and chesterfield sofas have been re upholstered in a mixture of fabrics and leather, and a new Quartz floor has been laid.
The lighting has been designed to create a more ambient setting, enhanced by a new fireplace, whilst commissioned artwork of London landmarks adds to the hotels personality. The Library Bar provides an eccentric feature and new heart to the hotel. The space has been reorganised and includes a new bar to provide an extended food & beverage offering. Accent lighting and contemporary furniture complete the setting.
The country gentlemen’s theme is continued throughout the 70 bed hotel with references to tailoring through the use of pin stripe and herringbone patterns, with custom made furniture & bespoke joinery.
