Client brief: Brighton's only designated London 2012 Olympic training venue wanted to improve its facilities in preparation for a busy year ahead. The task was to rejuvenate the tired and slightly characterless existing cafe to better reflect the vibrant, relaxed and fun nature of Yellowave.
Challenges & Inspiration: To completely transform the existing cafe within a tight timescale and limited budget, to incorporate Yellowave's branding and that of their sponsors, Barefoot Wines. To capture the laid back, chilled atmosphere of this unique venue whilst retaining an homogenous and contemporary feel.
The scheme incorporates elements the classic beach shack but injects a contemporary edge whilst avoiding cliche and whimsy (strictly no seashells, surfboards or driftwood). The scheme incorporates booth seating, product display areas and a community information wall that collates details of fixtures, weather, winners and events. The scheme has rationalised the display of merchandise, f+b and information.
Furniture/ Lighting/ Materials: Materials, finishes and furniture generally had to be robust enough to withstand sunlight, sand, occasional seawater and salt air. The materials used generally reflect the contemporary beach shack theme: rough sun-bleached timber, painted floors, utilitarian light fittings. The furniture was designed to be robust, practical and substantial enough to deter clients from taking it outside. Railway sleepers were re-configured to form stools, the tables have chunky plywood tops on raw steel bases. Plywood is used generally to create a contemporary feel whilst being practical and economical. Turquoise utilitarian enamelled pendant light fittings reflect Yellowave's branding.
Brand: The scheme generally reflects Yellowave's vibrant and energetic brand as well as that of their sponsor, Barefoot Wines.
