WAN Product of the Year Awards Exhibition with BAU launches in London

The WAN Product of the Year exhibition brought together an array of top products selected by an international panel of experts in the 2011 WAN Product of the Year Awards, in partnership with BAU.The WAN Product of the Year Awards, an annual competition run by World Architecture News, aims to celebrate and promote the best in new architectural products and materials, from ingenious LEDs to ‘space age’ windows.

The display of six shortlisted and commended entries along with the overall winner was proudly presented to an enthusiastic group of over a hundred architects, designers, engineers and manufacturers in a dedicated launch party in Buro Happold’s London offices, in celebration of the entrants’ outstanding achievements. With these innovative and ground-breaking new additions to the architectural industry as the central focus, the evening was punctuated by enlightening talks from New London Architecture’s Peter Murray and WAN’s Editor in Chief, Michael Hammond.

Impressing the judges with their unique and wide-ranging credentials, this year’s shortlisted contenders included Xicato’s LED modules, which take the existing advantages of LEDs in terms of cost, ecology and convenience to the next level; VERGOKAN’s KBSTI, a completely revolutionary concept which, due to its unique shape, is far-removed from the traditional form of current cable tray systems; Resysta, a brand new composite material that uses widely available rice husks to replace tropical hardwood, and finally Isis by Big Ass Fans, which has effectively improved air movement in architectural spaces worldwide. At the forefront of timber trade innovation, Kebony was commended for forging a new market for high quality, durable and cost-effective wood that is environmentally-friendly and sustainable.

The triumphant winner was Pilkington’s ultra-thin vacuum glazing, Spacia. At an astonishing thickness of only 6.5mm, it delivers an impressive 78% light transmission, with an acoustic performance that is 3dB better than triple glazing. With the possibility of glazing areas as large as 2,400 X 1,350mm and a life expectancy far in excess of the 10 year warranty, this product truly is a deserving winner of this prestigious award.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for WAN to become the conduit for the architectural community in London for such a huge trade show in Munich. The collection of Products in the shortlist and of course, the winner, has such strong ECO credentials; it provides a fantastic snapshot of the direction the industry’s moving.” comments Michael Hammond, Editor in Chief, WAN.

“Buro Happold are delighted to take part in judging the WAN Product of the Year Awards. It’s great to see such a diverse range of new products, although it’s always a challenge for the judging panel to select a winner from so many worthy candidates” adds Andrew Best, WAN Judge and Director at Buro Happold.
