Contemporary residential block in Limassol, Cyprus completed by Photiou Architects

Local design studio Photiou Architects has recently completed a modern apartment block in the major Cypriot city of Limassol. The sleek residential building is a highly sustainable new addition to the coastal community with design choices specifically tailored to ensure an energy efficient, socially responsible tower.

Spread over six storeys, Residence 51 offers a range of apartments which differ in both size and floor plan, many with arresting views over the adjacent Akrotiri Bay. External verandas wrap around the entire building and provide transitional spaces between interior living space and the external environment.

A marble-clad lobby area welcomes visitors and residents to the building, off which are located a series of lifts and stairs to the residential floors. This common space also supplies views out to extensively landscaped gardens completed by Marilena Sophocleous Landscape Architects through generously proportioned openings.

The tight site has been fully utilised by slightly twisting each of the residential blocks to enable a dynamic flow throughout the complex whilst retaining the essential sea views. An outdoor pool completes this communal space and it too follows the irregular form of the plot.

Throughout the 12,500 sq m building certain design choices have made to enhance the sustainable properties of the complete facility. These include: the shape and orientation of the building to capture winter sunlight; a highly insulated and efficient building envelope; external solar shading; a rainwater/greywater harvesting system; implementation of solar powered water heaters; extensive use of natural light; and use of an energy centre shared with adjoining projects.
