Michael Hammond meets Tom Kundig

The 2010 WAN Residential Award-winning architect opens up to our Editor in Chief

Tom Kundig of Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects was in London last month to deliver a presentation to the Royal Academy of Arts Architecture Programme, run by Kate Goodwin, entitled Landscape, Community and Craft. I managed to catch him in his hotel during his visit.

Tom was a winner of last year’s House of the Year Award, always a high point in the WAN AWARDS calendar, with his compelling Pierre structure set in a dramatic rockscape. The bold design had won the hearts and minds of our jury panel and had been a clear winner against 87 other entries from all around the world.

Over the next hour, Tom talked not only about the ideas behind his designs but also about the increasing impact of the Internet is having on his practice. More and more clients are coming to his firm because they have seen his designs online…
