Atlantic Wharf integrates modern architecture in a sustainable and harmonious way

Atlantic Wharf, the first LEED Gold skyscraper in Boston, transformed the city’s skyline and advanced the marketplace for sustainable live, work, play urban environments. The $270 million (US Dollars) mixed-use development contains over one million sq ft of space including 86 residential units, ground-level retail and public spaces, six storeys of below-grade parking and 30 floors of office space.

The new development sits on a platform of restored and renovated historic structures. The preservation of the historic 1899 Peabody & Stearns Russia Building and the existing facades of the other wharf buildings is an essential component to the project.

The project team developed solutions to maintain the historic fabric at the street level while integrating the existing structures into the modern, new architecture of the glass tower. The office tower’s taut glass curtainwall introduces a contemporary aesthetic and the exterior wall projects at an angle beyond the bold structural frame to create a sail-like form. When illuminated at night, the building’s radiant form is a distinct and fresh addition on Boston’s skyline.

The 31-storey tower emerges from the ground level and a soaring 8-storey glass-enclosed atrium creates the grand office tower entry. Structural columns were sculpted into signature design elements that represent an organic tree form. Also within the space is a one-of-a-kind water feature that spans the full height of the 90’ atrium, encouraging the visitor’s eye to look upward within the space.

Atlantic Wharf may also be entered through a striking, two-storey public entry and civic space known as Town Square. Sustainable strategies were applied throughout the development, including an innovative rainwater storage and reuse system, energy conserving mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, green roofs and daylighting design throughout the office tower.
