Global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan has revealed the concept design for the first 21st century shopping centre in the northern Polish city of Elbląg and wider region, which will see the city and region host international retail brands for the first time, and create over 1,000 jobs.
Design work is now progressing on the high-profile regional ‘Siódemka’ shopping centre, following the recent acquisition of developer New Europe Property Holdings by private equity investment group Bridgehouse, with the practice now set to deliver the detailed design for the centre, including interior design and branding.
The 224,458 sq m site will boast a gross leasable area of 67,000 sq m, served by 1,800 parking spaces, and feature a fully-enclosed 40,000 sq m shopping mall, with 110 retail outlets, a themed food court and related facilities. It will also include a 27,000 sq m retail park, with 15 retail warehouse units, and a motorway service area with a fuel station and restaurants, to serve one of Poland’s busiest summer holiday routes.
Sustainability is a key factor in the design, with green spaces included in the centre, natural light maximised to reduce the need for artificial lighting, and the inclusion of ground source heat pumps.
The practice’s Warsaw-based design director Robert Kaminski said: “The delivery of the concept design is the result of close partnering between our global team of diverse expert designers and the client, as well as the wider project team, which we are jointly managing with the overall project manager. We will now progress the design, to deliver a scheme that will be of regional significance in northern Poland, of a scale that will raise the profile of Elbląg, and exemplify the current wave of innovative retail development in the Poland’s smaller cities and regional centres.”
