UK-based architecture and design practice John McAslan + Partners has commissioned a stirring new exhibition at the William Road Gallery in London, showcasing the stunning works of Indian photo-journalist Raghu Rai.
The nineteen images on display are a moving portrait of the lives of the Kabaris in Delhi: a community of over 1,100 waste pickers whose entire lives depend on sorting recycling and usable goods from the tonnes of public refuse that ends up at Ghazipur – Delhi’s largest landfill site.
These stark images are not designed to shock, rather than to draw attention to the invaluable work of Chintan, an Environmental Research and Action Group that looks to boost the wellbeing of Kabaris and find sustainable alternative work sources. Currently 179 of the 690 children living in the Ghazipur landfill community work as Kabaris however it is the aim of Chintan to reduce this number to 0.
Compassion for the Kabaris exhibition runs until 30th September, Monday-Friday 8.30am-6.30pm at William Road Gallery, 7-9 William Road, London NW1 3ER, Tel: 020 7313 6000
