Global design firm completes sensitive unifying hotel project in scenic UK city

Whilst design studio Make has amassed an impressive portfolio of international hotel projects, it has only recently completed its first hotel in the UK – the Montpellier Chapter in Cheltenham. Sensitively crafted to retain the original grandeur and stateliness of the Grade II Listed Victorian mansion that is the Montpellier Chapter, the unifying project by Make aimed to unite the building’s many architectural additions into a single seamless edifice.

Entitled ‘the Crescent’, a simple extension designed by the architects ties the exiting wings of the building together with a communal open-aired courtyard space in the centre. Drawing inspiration from the red glazing and bronze hues employed elsewhere in the existing structure, the courtyard is wrapped in a veil of coloured facetted glass which effortlessly intertwines the old and new quarters.

Project architect and partner at Make, Philip Twiss explains: “The project was unusual in that the original brief was left deliberately loose, initially consisting of a design ‘DNA’ and vision statement only. This was great because, rather than having strict brand standards applied to the interior design, this allowed us to evolve the brand with the client as the architectural design developed in a holistic way.”

Contemporary art and design have been effused into the Victorian mansion, with a thoughtfully curated art collection from Central Saint Martin’s College permanently on display, showcasing the best in student and professional artistic talents. Similarly, bespoke wooden furnishings by British designer Matthew Hilton have been installed throughout the facility, with signature Hepburn sofas in the reception area, I-beam tables in the library and desk chairs in each bedroom.
