Win $1,000 for a trip to London and your photo exhibited in the West End in WAN and Buro Happold's Spirit of Detroit competition

As Detroit celebrates its 310th birthday this year (July 24th to be exact) there is plenty to celebrate about the spirit of the city, its people, its future and the State of Michigan.

Detroit remains renowned for its two great contributions to world business and popular culture: as Motor City at the innovative heart of the US auto industry and as the music and entertainment heart of Motown.

Today Detroit is a global business and sports hub for fans and home to great teams: Tigers, Red Wings, Lions and Pistons…there is a new energy in the city. Detroit is looking to the future building on hard-learnt lessons from a tough past that we all understand - or have shared - but with a rich heritage to build on and a new sense of purpose.

Having made such a positive, indelible mark on the world the story of Detroit’s regeneration in a post industrial economy has really caught the hearts and minds across the globe – it is this interest that has inspired this photo competition and the Spirit of Detroit free exhibition in the heart of London’s West End.

WAN and Buro Happold are asking the 910,000 residents plus millions more friends, visitors and relatives to take a fresh look at that pioneering spirit and to take part in our photo competition. We are asking entrants to join the Spirit of Detroit Facebook page and to upload up to five images, that you either own or have taken and which you believe illustrate ‘The Spirit of Detroit’.

These could be images that illustrate important aspects about the history of Detroit, life in the city today, or images that depict its potential future. Your images might focus on the buildings, the local landscape, the people of Detroit or something completely different! We want you to share the spirit that you have found in Detroit that has made it a great place to visit, live, work or play in.

The judging panel, made up of some of the most senior and respected architects, engineers, artists and designers of our day, will select one overall winning image and two runners up images. These photos will be included in The Spirit of Detroit photo exhibition, opening in London on February 9th 2011 in Newman St in London’s West End. The closing date for entries is Thursday 3rd February, 2011.

• One overall winner will receive a $1,000 budget to pay for or towards a trip to London and receive a fabulous commemorative print of their image
• Two runners up will receive camera equipment worth $250
