Spread over five levels, the new station will attempt to transform the daily commute currently undertaken by 150,000 passengers who pass through the existing Tottenham Court Road Station, originally opened in 1900. Fluid pedestrian movement is a key concept in the project, with step-free access provided at multiple entrances and exits, and clear navigation throughout.
Work on redeveloping the existing Tube station in ongoing, doubling its capacity and vastly expanding the ticket hall making it around six times larger. Once the Tube and Crossrail services are combined, the final Tottenham Court Road Station will be almost a kilometre in length, stretching from Soho to Centre Point with new station entrances at Centre Point featuring large glass elements allowing a high volume of natural light into the station.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's transport adviser, said: "Crossrail is more than just a transport project as these designs prove. As well as being a fantastic feat of subterranean engineering, the new station will transform the look and feel of the public realm surrounding the Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford Street."
Rob Holden, Crossrail Chief Executive said: "A new Crossrail station combined with a major redevelopment of the existing Tube station will transform the Tottenham Court Road area and act as a catalyst for further investment securing the West End's position as a premier shopping and entertainment destination and major employment centre."
The design contract for Tottenham Court Road Station (Western Ticket Hall) was awarded to consultants Arup/Atkins with HawkinsBrown as architects.
