Biannual architectural design competition invites european students to get creative

European students are being invited to submit their designs for the complete refurbishment of the Archives of the National Library in Versailles, France, as part of the biannual architectural design competition, Prix W 2010. The award is promoted by the Foundation d’Entreprise Wilmotte – a foundation created five years ago by French architect Jean-Michel Willmotte. Scholarship prizes of €7000 for first place, €5000 for second place and €2000 for third are up for grabs.

The brief explains: “The French National Archives former warehouse's site will have to be rehabilitated. The aeration of the plot, the implementation of housing spaces, the creation of offices and the conservation of an archive space will enable the participants to express their sensitivity regarding contemporary graft. This year's theme goes beyond the traditional pattern. It is rooted in Versailles historic and contemporary heritage, and offers interesting creative challenges to the participants.”

The competition is open to students and young architects of architecture schools from the European Union and Switzerland, who graduated after December 31st, 2006. They will have to justify their current or past inscription in a school. For the session of 2010 an architect interior designer is allowed to participate but only in an association with an architect or student in architecture. Winning proposals will be selected on the grounds of overall quality of the architectural graft, strategy, innovation and feasibility.

The site consists of three parallel buildings - around 50m x 13m - built in 1933, 1955 and 1968. The 3400 sq m lot is enclosed and the distance between the buildings is only 5m for a 15m height. This lot offers eight floors, two of them being underground.
