Woods Bagot underway with major hospital redevelopment in Queensland

Woods Bagot was appointed as Principal Consultant and Architect for the Mackay Base Hospital Redevelopment. The project is the full redevelopment (expansion) of an existing Regional Hospital. It will be delivered in a three-stage sequential program and is expected to take four years to complete in full.

The Woods Bagot master plan and strategy has resulted in more new construction and less refurbished works, a 20% reduction in the original construction program, a greater alignment with the intended model of care / services, delivery of a significant ESD agenda and has provided for a more flexible and pragmatic future-proofing solution. The master plan proposes a new acute hospital, refurbishment of the existing main building for administration and other non-critical functions. Above all else, the hospital is designed to 'foster excellence'.

Hospital executives have confirmed that design considerations have been successful in attracting new staff to Mackay Base Hospital (MBHR). “Showcasing the design of the new hospital and the innovative ideas, especially relating to staff facilities, has been a major contributor to getting high level, experienced clinicians to join our District” said David Farlow, District Director of Clinical Services.

This idea developed the provision of an 'All Staff Retreat'. The staff retreat could be compared with a business class Airport lounge - where dining, relaxing or sleeping, TV and internet facilities are available. The lounge overlooks the stunning Pioneer River with sugar cane fields and ranges in the distance. It also provides external access to a 240 sq m deck with barbeque facilities and staff gym.
