New café in Malta

Wednesday 21 Apr 2010

Café Cordina is located at the geographical and social centre of Valletta’s cosmopolitan life. Established in 1837, the founders relocated to Valletta in 1944, within the vaults of a former theatre/cinema. Over the years the café has been enlarged and today comprises tearooms, a patisserie, gelateria, restaurant, and an outdoor café. It stands on a corner, between the elegant Piazza Regina and its dominant neo-classical National Library and St George’s Square, the city’s main ceremonial piazza which is fronted by the Grandmaster’s palace, the seat of Parliament and the President of Malta. Lawyers, parliamentarians, and the local business community are often seen enjoying the opulent interiors.

The project involved the refurbishment of a section of the property, to take advantage of the re-opening of the pedestrianised main square. The dining room offers its clients a tranquil dining experience in the centre of town.

Architecture Project (AP) is a network of Architectural practices with offices in London, Malta and Croatia. Other projects in Valletta include the Manoel Theatre and development of the city’s waterfront.
