New media centre in Barcelona designed with extensive use of Texlon© ETFE

The Media Tic building, built in the heart of Barcelona’s new 22 district, is designed to act as a meeting point for the world of information and communication technologies, as well as for the media and audio-visual sectors. Featuring new initiatives and programmes, designed in conjunction with the Barcelona Digital Foundation, to encourage development and community within the digital industry.

ETFE design and build contractor Vector Foiltec, came to work with architecture firm Cloud 9, on the Media Tic project due to their extensive understanding and usage of the possibilities of Texlon© ETFE. Using 2,500 sq m of Texlon© ETFE cladding, the Media Tic building will enable energy savings of 20% and will score 42 points of the maximum 57 points envisaged by the decree on environmental criteria and energy eco-efficiency set for this project. Texlon© ETFE is anti-adherent, preventing it from becoming dirty and requiring cleaning maintenance. It does not lose its characteristics of elasticity, transparency or strength over time and improves thermal insulation, as well as offering shade by means of a pneumatic system.

The South East façade of the building receives an average of six hours of sunshine a day, requiring an external solar system based on a double layer of cladding that is regulated, domotic, structurally light, with low energy consumption and high illumination efficiency. To combat this, the architect used an exterior ‘film’ of material with a variable Texlon© ETFE solar filter in a diaphragm configuration, constructed with 3 layers of Texlon© ETFE, with constant pressure and variable circulation of air between the chambers.
