Shortlist announced for WAN AWARDS Education sector

Thursday 08 Apr 2010

This week, two jury panels met to condense longlists of Built and Unbuilt education projects into two concise shortlists, featuring only the highest grade entries. It was repeatedly noted that the calibre of entries this year had increased dramatically, with a wide array of stunning designs making the jurors decisions very difficult indeed.

'Unbuilt' juror and Associate of HLMAD Limited Andrew Norman, was impressed by the high level of design excellence displayed by the award entries, commenting: "With few exceptions it was encouraging to see that schools design is going from strength to strength – some of the schemes that didn’t make the short list may well have won a few years ago. The geographical spread of projects was also impressive and shows there is much we can continue to learn from international work."

This positive note was echoed by 'Built' juror and Director of 3DReid Alex Donaldson, who noted: "The Awards attracted a large number of high calibre entries, ranging in scale, character and public profile. Our task was not easy". To reduce 51 outstanding projects to just 12 of the crème de la crème is no mean feat, but luckily our dedicated and knowledgeable panel managed it. The projects vying for pole position this year spanned all corners of the Earth - from Chile to Kuwait and Lebanon to Japan - all displaying an exceptional level of architectural design talent. The shortlisted results in alphabetical order are as follows:
