International competition entries fail to wow

After a UIA competition attracting 274 entries, no winner has been appointed for the International Business Centre and Intercontinental Hotel bound for Yerevan in Armenia. Instead a second and third prize were awarded, leaving the design for the Mercedes Benz-led project in the air.

A prestigious jury which included the Mayor of Yerevan and the Chairman of Aravan Motors as well as architecture professionals Michael Rotondi of RoTo architects and Mkrtich Minasyan, Chairman of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Armenia underwent six rounds of judgement over the entries before reaching a decision. After round four 12 projects were selected to continue to round five where 6 were left remaining.

The competition outlined six main criteria for the entries including urban integration and landscape concept. But while it was agreed by the client that the final projects held artistic merit, it was expressed that one of the criteria – to meet the programme of requirement of the brief – was not met in any of the finalists.

The competition called for an international business centre to include an Intercontinental hotel – it was the hotel, in particular, that the clients felt was not addressed successfully. While no winner was announced, second prize was awarded to Agence Search and third prize to Federico Ennas.
