'World's greatest museum' calls on top architects to perform expansion design study

The Victoria and Albert Museum, commonly regarded as the world’s greatest museum of art and design, has launched two design challenges for the expansion of the museum in the past fortnight. A design competition for a new museum in Dundee, Scotland and a design consultation with several highly regarded architects for expansion plans at the South Kensington site are now underway.

David Chipperfield, Jamie Fobert, Tony Fretton, Heneghan Peng, Amanda Levete, Francisco Mangado of Mangado + Asociados, OMA, Sutherland Hussey Architects, Snøhetta have all agreed to conduct a design study for the development of its last remaining site at South Kensington, the Boilerhouse Yard. SANAA is still to confirm its participation.

The plans are to include the creation of 1,500sq m of temporary exhibition space below ground, with a courtyard at street level, leading on to Exhibition Road. While the consultation will provide insight into restrictions and possible design solutions the project is to be submitted for architectural tender through OJEU. “The design study is not a competition. There will be no ‘winning’design, nor will there be formal feedback given on the final submissions, so as not to prejudice any future open competition,” said a spokesperson for the V & A. The designs will, however be submitted at the beginning of May 2010 and exhibited in the V&A’s Studio Gallery from 21 June - 17 September 2010.

Further north architects are being challenged to submit plans for a new £47 million V & A museum in Dundee. “We are proposing a stunning location actually out into the River Tay and wewant to find a design team that can deliver a world class building fitting forsuch a high quality project,” said Mike Galloway, Director of CityDevelopment for Dundee City Council.

The two stage competition is expected to attract high profile architects from around the world. The collaboration between the V & A, the University of Dundee, the University of AbertayDundee, Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise will be the landmark project in the regeneration of land linking the city centre with the River Tay with a feasibility study conducted last year suggesting the plans could add 900 jobs locally and £5.7m output to the Scottish economy.
