Tesco launch department store in Prague

Chapman Taylor have recently completed the reconstruction of a 'world class' department store for Tesco in Prague, which opened on 21st September 2009. The store, branded as 'MY' (formally 'Maj'), is located on Narodni Trida in the heart of the city.

The 1975 building is a National Cultural Monument and represents a rare example of a rigorous architectural concept being realised under the communist regime. The store offers 12,000 sq m of sales area on 6 levels. The escalators are located separately to the main retail floors in a precursor to the Pompidou Centre.

Chapman Taylor worked closely with the authors of the original design (1971) to create a respectful modernisation of the building to meet the needs of contemporary customers. The interiors concepts were developed by Fitch in the UK. The MY department store concept will initially be rolled out throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
