On a wooded hillside in Weston, Massachusetts, 3 New England "salt boxes" come together around a common living space. Light, air, & nature flow through the space between these red cedar clad "boxes." The clients wanted the house to reflect an East-West synthesis, connected to nature, built with clean contemporary lines and materials that develop a patina and weather with grace. The architect calls it Zen House.

Rock ledges rise behind the house. A path leads past a spring & Zen garden to places of meditation, while an outdoor roof deck and dining terrace complement the site's natural elements. The exterior is crafted with sustainably harvested red cedar plank. Bamboo floors & cabinerts were installed throughout. The roof & chimney and cornices are zinc.An array of solar photovoltaic panels and a green house were planned, but were not built in this phase.
