Dubai Arts District launched at Cityscape

Bespoke arts precinct will be "First-of-its-kind" for the rapidly expanding city

Set within Dubai's International Media Production Zone (IMPZ), a commercially and residentially combined 'arts precinct' is being created - the Dubai Arts District. Covering an area of 26 hectares the project offers freehold, community-living within a free zone, including commercial, residential, retail and community buildings within a central landscaped park.

The development, created to service Dubai’s blossoming media industry, is designed as a highly desirable place to live and work. It is situated on the Emirates Road in ‘New Dubai’ and is to be completed in 2011. The new airport nearby is set to become the largest in the world, connecting IMPZ to all points of the globe.

David Marks, Managing Director of Marks Barfield, the creators of the London Eye, responsible for the design of the 11 residential buildings in the district, comments: “This bespoke development will be a first-of-its-kind arts precinct project in Dubai and is intended to attract design-conscious purchasers seeking a quality environment.”

At the entrance to the site there are three compact low-carbon buildings, dubbed the ‘Pebble’ buildings. Shaped by the natural environment, their visual reference stems from the soft rounded shapes that are created by exposure to nature over time. Another set of buildings tries to imitate wave shapes. The appearance of each building will change throughout the day and across the seasons.

The site’s Clubhouse will be the community hub for the project. The Clubhouse’s design includes a swimming pool, children’s play area, gym and spa, all of which are designed to complete a stress-free life in the creative neighbourhood.

The Global Media Hub IMPZ will bring together graphic arts, new media and publishing companies to interact and collaborate effectively. The IMPZ master-development team is an initiative of the Dubai government. The zone will support and foster the growth of media production, promoting Dubai itself as a global media hub.
