Sustainability is an integrated part of the design process. 80 Queen Street is the first high rise building in New Zealand to be awarded 5 Green Stars under the new NZ Green Building Council’s Office Rating Design Tool. ESD elements include a double ventilated façade, improved natural lighting to offices, low water usage fittings, extensive metering of energy and water usage and a rainwater harvesting system. The users of the building are encouraged to walk or cycle to work by the provision of showers and changing facilities in the basement. The project started on site in 2006 and is due for completion in September 2009.
The 80 Queen Street Development, which will be developed, built, owned and managed by Multiplex, will be a landmark office building in central Auckland. Woods Bagot of Sydney has collaborated with New Zealand based architects Warren and Mahoney. Deloittes and Bank of New Zealand will both have premium office space in the 21 storey building. On the ground floor there are a number of retail units, which create an active street frontage to the four sided site. The generous entrance foyer contains a café as well as the usual reception areas. The primarily glazed building consists of a 7 storey high podium and a 13 storey tower. Part of the podium consists of the existing 1940’s Jean Batten Building. This heritage government building is constructed in the art deco “moderne” style.
