The building design is underpinned by architectural references to landform and sky enabling an appropriate built form to suit the functional requirements of the two main lecture theatre spaces. This is in turn overlaid by encryptions of three aspects of its location that ensure this building has strong sense of place: geology (stratification), Pacific culture (tattoo) and anatomical learning (DNA coding).
This new building on AUT’s Akoranga Campus will house two new state of the art lecture theatres, a function room, substantial foyers and ancillary spaces. The foyer space opens out to the north onto a large new landscaped plaza which will cater for outdoor functions and performances. In addition to providing much needed teaching space on the campus, the facilities will be available for conferences and exhibitions both for the University and for external users.
