Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's 201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower due to complete in 2008

201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower is the biggest speculative office development ever undertaken in the City of London. The two buildings, totalling 822,000 sq ft (76,000 sq m), were designed by the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) for The British Land Company.The development is already underway and on programme for completion in 2008. The steel frame for the Tower has reached its full height at level 35, and together with the adjoining 13 storey building, represents the next phase of the Broadgate Estate. Between the two buildings, a new public space and 7-storey galleria will house shops, bars and cafes as well as a colonnade of mature trees – some as tall as 13 metres.The development is made possible by a raft that sits over the railway lines that run into Liverpool Street Station, a major engineering feat upon which both buildings are being constructed. The two buildings are technically sophisticated and include a number of innovations, such as double decker lifts and an efficient heating and cooling plant, which is expected to produce a lower level of emissions than required by current building regulations.The Broadgate Tower is the taller of the two buildings and, standing at 165 metres high, will be the third tallest building in the City of London. It will also be the tallest building built in London since the completion of One Churchill Place in early 2004. Overall, it will provide over 30 floors of offices, with each floor providing between 12,000 and 14,000 sq ft of space.
