Long views to the sea

Tuesday 27 Nov 2007

Alan Phillips Architects conceived this private residence as a simple pavilion with long views to the sea.

The concept was to refer back to the vocabulary of early modernism, then use contemporary technology to create a progressive variation that arbitrated between idealism and the functionalist tradition of coastal architecture. The building is over two levels and arranged in three parts – Two bedroom wings at either end of the house connected by a double height sitting room at the centre. Protecting the entrance is a garage and guesthouse beside a series of largely windowless walls. As the house addresses a private garden it begins to ‘unfold’ becoming transparent as the aesthetic system transfers from a hierarchy of solid over void, to one of void over solid.
