Four out of six of the shortlist for this year’s most prestigious architectural award in the UK, the Stirling Prize, are overseas, confirming criticisms that UK clients are unadventurous when commissioning architecture. Last year’s winner Richard Rogers had highlighted the freedom of designing overseas. The winning scheme, Madrid’s Barajas Airport had been designed and completed within a fraction of the timescale of London’s still unfinished Terminal 5 project. Most of Zaha’s work is overseas and she only received UK commissions after she was acclaimed by the rest of the world.
