Wandsworth Borough Council has granted planning consent to Frasers Property for nearly 400 new apartments at Riverside Quarter in Wandsworth. It is a major masterplan mixed-use development designed in collaboration between Carey Jones Architects and Make Architects. The approved plans comprise six new residential buildings, of varying height rising from four storeys to fifteen storeys, set above a two storey commercial podium. This site is at the important point on the riverside where the River Wandle meets the Thames. Of the new homes, there will be 211 private apartments and 186 affordable homes, of which 156 will be sold with shared equity and 30 will be social rented housing. The scheme also provides 180,000 sq ft. of commercial space on the lower levels which will bring new jobs to the area. Architecturally the unique feature of the scheme is the design for the conservatory-style loggias, with retractable glazing which provide an ingenious indoor / outdoor living zone. Each building is structured as a series of ’interlocking silver clad shells’ and has been designed to maximise the views of the landscaped gardens, the river and the Hurlingham Club beyond. Each apartment features full height glazing on the leading edge of each ‘shell’ that allows a significant increase in natural light to the apartments. Already completed in the earlier phases of Riverside Quarter are 203 private apartments overlooking the river and 60,000 sq ft of commercial space, including a residents’ leisure centre, a convenience store and a restaurant. The landscaped public open space at ground level designed by landscape architect Lovejoy incorporates a new piazza at the eastern end of the site. There will also be residents’ gardens above the commercial space on the second floor.
