Diller Scofidio + Refro's Lincoln Center modernization - well underway.

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City is undergoing a major transformation of its 16-acre campus. The redevelopment effort involves four major initiatives that are estimated to cost $1.2 billion, of which approximately two thirds has already been raised.

The redevelopment of 65th Street is the first project underway. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Refro with FX Fowle Architects, this project aims to make a more open and transparent campus. The design creates a “Street of the Arts” lined on both sides with new building facades, innovative visitor information systems, dramatic light and new indoor outdoor facilities for dining and refreshments. The project includes major facility expansion as, for example, a new Alice Tully Hall and a new Film Center, the later designed by the Rockwell Group. Also included is a new destination restaurant with a public roof lawn, a spacious retail shop and a dramatic new street level identity for six resident companies.

The second redevelopment project is the Lincoln Center Promenade. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Refro with Beyer Blinder Belle, the promenade project is designed to further unite Lincoln Center with the surrounding cityscape. The focus is a new primary entryway along Columbus Avenue and a revamped public plaza.

A related and third project is the Transformation of Harmony Atrium, an underutilized indoor public space. The redesign, by Tod Williams Billie Tsein Architects will transform the atrium into a “theatrical garden”. The design features two twenty-foot high moss walls and stone benches made from Connemara Irish Moss marble balanced by water elements to create an indoor garden and gathering space.

The projects are scheduled to be completed in time for the celebration of Lincoln Center’s 50th Anniversary in 2009-2010.
