Croydon Council bent on disruption

UK developers Stanhope plc may have thought that winning planning consent for its £600 million redevelopment project at London’s East Croydon Station would have been the last hurdle before work could start. They were wrong. In an extraordinary sequence of events, Croydon Council has now vowed to stop the development and has threatened to use Compulsory Purchase powers (CPO) to take control of the site. The council has a long standing contract with Arrowcroft and prefers their alternative scheme. Arrowcroft had been appealing in the High Court but dropped its case last week. Stanhope’s partner in the scheme, Schroders have maintained that construction will start on site this summer. William Hill, property director at Schroders reportedly said, “The Arrowcroft challenge was a delaying tactic to prevent us from implementing the planning consent. The CPO in our view is just a side show, with no chance of success.” Croydon Council responded with, “ We still want the Arrowcroft scheme.” Project team is: Foster & Partners, Masterplanners/architects(Office buildings 1-3 and all residential) Faulkner Browns Architects, Building (Office Building 4)
