Madrid Barajas Airport opened in 1933 and was subsequently extended several times. It had become over-stretched and the Spanish National Airports Authority (AENA) initiated a design competition in1997.The winner was a consortium of Richard Rogers Partnership and Estudio Lamela.The new European terminal which aims to compete with Charles de Gaulle will accommodate up to 70 million passengers per annum and move 18,000 passengers at peak periods. The design is energy efficient, economic and functional, accommodating anticipated growth and flexibility, allowing for future extensions. The wavy roof of bamboo accompanies passengers through the interior of the building highlighting a peaceful atmosphere. Plan includes a satellite, ancillary buildings and two new runways.
