Affortable housing and integrated development are two themes that have been pursued with this developer over this developer over the past six years. The long and narrow site is in the centre of the Port Melbourne retail precinct. The requirement to retain the historic street retail facade and shops and the proximity and height of the developments of either side, have challenged us to produce an innovative self-contained resolution. Single level, one-bedroom apartments each with a generous terrace pre locate over a semi-basement carpark, above two storey two-bedroom apartments. The exterior is expressed in a parallel of charcoal concrete blockwork and sloping cedar-clad screens and facetted zinc clad walls. The resultant composition generates a complex family of inter-linked forms that providfe a fine-grain intervention sympathetic to the historic Bay St. streetscape.
