Tech Spot #111 Rolflex, Copenhagen, Denmark
A neat answer to access issues
Architects, Engineers and Construction Professionals are always looking for durable, quality products to compliment their projects and Rolflex folding doors perfectly fit the bill
The eye-catching Amager Bakke waste to energy plant in Copenhagen has been causing quite a stir in the architecture industry ever since the initial plans were covered on World Architecture News in early 2011.
So it's no wonder that Netherlands-based Rolflex BV are delighted that their Compact folding doors have been chosen as the main access doors to the main process hall at the plant.
Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) the building also has a landscaped roof which facilitates outdoor activities and an all the year round ski slope. Situated on Copenhagen's world famous waterfront it is set to become a major tourist attraction benefiting the local community.
During the preparation of detailed drawings it became apparent to the design team that there was insufficient space to install conventional sectional doors as they require secondary support for the door panels when opening.
There was also a need for services to be positioned adjacent to the doors.
The Compact folding door neatly solved these problems. It's unique side rails fold the self-supported insulated panels directly above the door opening. Another product feature adopted by the team was to install the Compact doors on the outside of the building by simply reversing the side rails, maximising free space inside.
A purpose designed watertight canopy protects the folded panels. All metal components are powder painted and the motors are to a carwash specification.
Commenting on the project Joost Megens MD of Rolflex said: " We were very pleased to have supplied our product to such an interesting and innovative building. We understand that by using our website technology the design team were able to design the access doors for themselves and receive by return drawings and specifications. This project fully endorses our company policy of custom made doors for the benefit of architects and their clients.
