Cassina motors into Milan

A custom-made project based on the creative wisdom of architect Michele De Lucchi and Lapo Elkann's business idea

For this project, Cassina's Contract Division has developed and supplied fully customized furnishings, such as tables, seats and armchairs, as well as millworks for the entire bar and restaurant area. Every element was conceived by Lapo Elkann and designed by aMDL under the guidance of Michele De Lucchi, as were the custom-made furnishings of the Riva Terrace, where the use of materials and especially upholstered furniture are inspired by the famous Aquarama motorboat, a symbol of exclusivity in the nautical world.

Garage Italia: the headquarters.

This brand created and directed by Lapo Elkann seeks to make any object or vehicle unique, be it a car, motorcycle, aeroplane, helicopter or boat, with tailor-made customisations aimed at research, balanced components, the study of materials and the reworking of the customer's dreams. The 1700 square-metre space is spread over two floors above ground and a basement floor for services and staff premises. The upper floor of the new headquarters has an area dedicated to cuisine and taste, with a Garage Italia Milano bar and restaurant managed by Chef Carlo Cracco, as well as the Riva Terrace, a large outdoor space bordered by tropical plants which overlooks Milan and is available only on reservation.

The Cassina furnishings.

Fifty 298 chairs were chosen for the furnishings: the ultimate director's chair designed by De Lucchi combines high technology and craftsmanship and is customised according to a design by Lapo Elkann and the Style Centre of Garage Italia with a Cassina black frame and graphics inspired by sports car liveries. The chairs were built in Cassina's carpentry shop, where they were made, finished and assembled by hand. There are also nine Ferrari Daytona chairs: a ready-made armchair using one of the Prancing Horse’s most iconic driver's seats, housed in a metallic tube frame inspired by race car roll bars. The two Ferrari 599 seats have become armchairs, while the large sofa was inspired by the history of Gianni Agnelli's Ferrari and features two-tone leather upholstery and USB sockets hidden in the armrests.

The outdoor terrace's flooring, table tops and supporting tops are in mahogany with maple slats, just like the deck of the famous motorboat Riva Aquarama.
