Expansion project set to double iconic New York museum’s footprint

Cooper Robertson has announced its selection as executive architect for the expansion of the New Museum in New York City, in collaboration with design architects OMA New York.

The New Museum expansion will take place on an adjacent property at 231 Bowery on Manhattan's Lower East Side, which the institution purchased in 2008. The expansion will double the museum’s footprint while complementing and respecting the integrity of the flagship building designed by Japanese firm SANAA in 2007. The project is scheduled to break ground in 2019.

This commission, spearheaded by Cooper Robertson partner Scott Newman, FAIA, and senior associate Andrew Barwick, RA, is the latest in a long line of notable museum projects by the firm. Its cultural practice, led by Newman, brings significant expertise in collections, space programming and museum design. With 38-plus museum projects around the United States and abroad, Cooper Robertson's clients have included MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale Center for British Art, Gettysburg, and the upcoming Gateway Arch Museum, St. Louis.

The WAN Awards Civic Buildings category is now open for entries
