Six projects showcase the best design for the Commercial Award 2017

The WAN Commercial Award 2017 category celebrates pioneering projects that are purposed for business activities. This award is open to completed designs that push commercial architecture into new and exciting directions - whether an office, restaurant, retail outlet, hotel or shopping mall.

Chosen for their commitment for excellence in design for this sector, this year’s jury panel were: Sarah Brown, Director at TateHindle, Benedict Tranel, Principal at Gensler, Ian Bogle, Founder at Bogle Architects and Chris Brandon, Managing Principal at Perkins + Will.

Shortlist listed in no particular order:

Multi-Place in Surat Thani, Thailand by Ekar Architects

“It’s a family space, it's their business, their community and located in a rugged location in a downtown area, sitting in its simplistic form within this setting, I like it. They’ve got one theme and they’ve carried it through. They’ve family funded it and it's a lovely story.” Sarah Brown

“Some of the interior spaces and gardens are very attractive.” Chris Brandon

“I like that this has got the whole story; it is a house that has this public functioning, it's interesting.” Benedict Tranel

Hotel Ohla Eixample in Barcelona, Spain by ESTUDI ISERN ASSOCIATS

“I liked this one. They did a nice job of summarising what the challenges were with its innovation there with the hydraulic dampening. I was very attracted to the image and what they have done with the facade, the play of the ceramic pattern with the wood behind it, I thought that was really interesting and that’s where you get this warmth. They have done a nice job of creating some really interesting moments and they have a purpose.” Benedict Tranel

“It has an elegant street façade with playful window boxes.” Chris Brandon

Washington Fruit & Produce Co. in Yakima, Washington, United States by Graham Baba Architects

“Inventive use of timber which manifests itself on the interior as well as the exterior. This project has a warm feeling and looks like a great place to work.” Ian Bogle

“I like this project, there’s a sense of quiet in the building. It’s got a lot of very nice moments.” Benedict Tranel

“I quite like it, there's a connection with the outside.” Chris Brandon

“This is just beautiful and you’d want to be there.” Sarah Brown

Falcon II in Mexico City, Mexico by Rojkind Arquitectos

“I liked the materials, I liked the creation and the simplicity. Although it's very rich texturally with the plants etc. architecturally the architecture behind it is very simple and elegant. It's got some originality.” Chris Brandon

“The garden wall façade adds real character to the space.” Benedict Tranel

Good Morning Cafe in Suwon-si, Korea by THE_SYSTEM LAB

“I really like this one. The reason why they’ve built it in the form they’ve given it is because of the residents nextdoor and they’ve tried to match with that, rather than contrast it. I really like this idea of this blanket that’s folded down and it has four points that rest down onto the ground. I just think this simplicity is just really lovely.” Sarah Brown

“I really like this one too. I was attracted to the fact that they use it for low income couples which gives it a bit more purpose. It’s very nice and there are no columns!Benedict Tranel

Glasshouse at Goonoo Goonoo Station in Goonoo Goonoo, Australia by Tanner Kibble Denton Architects

“I thought that it was really beautiful, I really like the natural materials outside, the inside spaces were just so soft and elegant.” Sarah Brown

“The richness of it is in the textures of the materials. It takes you on a journey where it unravels all of the spaces.” Chris Brandon

“It's very elegant, refined and it creates warmth. I just think it’s really well done.” Benedict Tranel

WAN AWARDS would like to thank the jury and congratulate all six finalists in the WAN Commercial Award 2017.

The winner of this category will be announced on the 28th February 2018 at our prestigious WAN AWARDS 2017 Event.
