DS+R have been chosen ahead of Frank Gehry and Renzo Piano to design a new ‘centre for music’ in London

New York architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro have been chosen to design a new City of London concert hall and home for Sir Simon Rattle’s London Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with London based Sheppard Robson.

DS+R was chosen from a star-studied shortlist of six architectural practices. They included Frank Gehry, the designer of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA and the Bilbao Guggenheim; Renzo Piano, the designer of the Pompidou Centre; and Amanda Levete, who was responsible for the recently completed V&A courtyard.

Commenting on the news Elizabeth Diller said: “My studio is very honoured to be chosen from this stellar group of architects and thrilled to have the chance to create an important cultural building for London, our first in the UK.

“The new building will meet the needs of artists and audiences today with a keen eye toward the future ... We aspire to make a hub where people want to spend their time, with or without a ticket.”

Diller Scofidio + Renfro are no strangers to major cultural projects with New York’s High Line, LA’s The Broad Museum of Contemporary Art and the redesign of New York’s Lincoln Center all featuring on their list of projects.

The new ‘centre for music’ will take shape in the heart of the City of London’s square mile where several major financial institutions and banks are clustered.

Following the appointment of DS+R, the London Symphony Orchestra, music director, Sir Simon Rattle said: “This announcement is an exciting step forward in the plans for a 21st-century centre for music that would be home to the London Symphony Orchestra. I am sure this outstanding design team will deliver plans for an exceptional new place for the enjoyment and understanding of music that is welcoming and open to all.”
