An amount of the apartments in VIA 57 West in New York are being made available at affordable prices

The Bjarke Ingels Group’s “courtscraper” in Manhattan, which has a large courtyard at its centre, is having its affordable housing element increased.

An additional 36 affordable apartments are being added to the 142 already available in VIA 57 West, which rises from the height of a handrail on one side to over 450 ft at its peak, with prices starting from $1,448 per month. The new total of 178 affordable homes will repesent a 20% affordable to 80% market rate split in the building as a whole.

The apartments in the tetrahedron-shaped residential tower will be approximately $1,000 a month cheaper than an average Manhattan home.

The rents in the homes are calculated based on the occupant’s annual salary which is compared to the average salary for the New York area. In 2017 the average salary in New York is $66,800 (£52.090).

Affordable apartments will be made available in four price bands – for tenants being paid 90, 100, 110 or 120% of the average salary for the New York area.
