A seven storey art installation by Terry Haggerty is to grace 3 Glass Wharf in Bristol in the UK

Bristol City Council has granted approval for a seven storey installation by contemporary artist Terry Haggerty on the exterior of 3 Glass Wharf, the new Darling Associates-designed 111,600 sq ft office building in Bristol’s Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone.

Created by British artist Terry Haggerty, the installation will be presented on the eastern elevation of 3 Glass Wharf facing the railway line approaching Bristol Temple Meads, one of the busiest gateways to the city.

Terry Haggerty explains: “For the facade of 3 Glass Wharf I felt it was important to work with the core element of the building’s exterior structure - the glass windows and the metal panels - and to give the impression that these window elements enter a playful section of the building where things go a little awry. The building is thrown into a random system where channels and passages are created to reveal a different kind of logic.”

The design is inspired by the intersecting train lines that run into the station, with bands of glass straddling floor to floor reflecting the interweaving structure of the train tracks as they enter Bristol Temple Meads, and symbolically the myriad of connections and transactions that take place throughout the city.

The installation uses glass as the main material in reference to the former glassworks that once occupied the site, with varying tones created by printing between two pieces of toughened glass to give the appearance of transparency on different planes.

Chris Darling, Managing Director, Darling Associates, comments: “Terry’s inventive artwork for 3 Glass Wharf works in harmony with our architectural design and offers a playful interpretation of the creative and industrial heritage of the site. As one of the main gateways into the city, we’re excited to see how visitors to Bristol will engage with this striking piece of contemporary art.”

Jenny Baguley, Art Coordinator, Salmon Harvester Properties Ltd, comments, “We are delighted with the artwork created by Terry Haggerty for installation at 3 Glass Wharf. I believe it will be a lasting contribution for this important gateway to Bristol.”

Currently under construction with completion due in December 2018 and with close links to Bristol Temple Meads station, 3 Glass Wharf is an eight-storey commercial building by Salmon Harvester Properties Ltd located alongside the Bristol Floating Harbour, and will include ground floor retail uses.

The design also includes a landscaped public space facing the river front, providing a spill out space from the main riverside pedestrian route.
