A crowdfunding campaign will help this unique project in north London move a step closer to completion

Local business group Camden Town Unlimited has launched a crowdfunding campaign to kick-start the development of the Camden Highline, a proposed public park and garden walk linking Camden Town and King’s Cross via disused elevated railway line. Funds will help pay for a feasibility study into the proposals.

The idea of a Camden Highline has been talked about locally for some time, with local residents, businesses, community groups and politicians keen to see the abandoned railway put to practical use as a new greenspace similar to New York’s iconic High Line.

The Camden Highline would run for nearly a kilometre, linking the world-famous Camden Market with the recently redeveloped King’s Cross area by a 10-minute walk.

Camden Town Unlimited has been working with Network Rail since early 2016 on the technical feasibility detail to do with using the infrastructure, and is now ready to take the next step towards construction.

The feasibility work commissioned by the crowdfunding campaign will establish key details, including the condition of the existing infrastructure, the resources required for transforming the disused railway, and timelines to completion.

As well as the feasibility work the crowdfunding campaign will help pay for events and workshops that will guide the project’s aims and ambitions, and a new community organisation that will deliver the Camden Highline.

Commenting on the crowdfunding campaign, Camden Town Unlimited Chief Executive Simon Pitkeathley said: “People in Camden have been talking about this for years. Now we’re putting our money where our mouth is to make this happen. We invite anyone who wants to see a New York-style Highline here in London, whether you live and work in Camden or are a visitor to the area, to donate what you can to help make this idea a reality.”

The crowdfunding campaign will run for around 100 days or whenever the circa £40k target is reached.
