Clad in 4.25 million pounds of raw copper two 41- and 48-storey towers have opened their doors in New York

SHoP Architects have completed the American Copper Buildings in New York.  The soaring pair of copper-clad luxury rental towers are linked by a three-story skybridge suspended 300 ft in the air. A collaboration between JDS Development Group and SHoP Architects located at 626 First Avenue along Manhattan’s East River waterfront, the American Copper Buildings has earned attention and praise around the world for its boldly unconventional architecture, including the angled silhouettes of the towers that maximize views and give them a “dancing” appearance.

“We’ve taken the same care, craft and precision that we put into our market-leading condominium developments and applied the same ideals to the American Copper Buildings,” said Michael Stern, Founder and Managing Partner of JDS Development Group. “The project is a marvel, from its design to its engineering and construction. And for tenants, it offers a lifestyle of luxury and convenience that cannot be found elsewhere.”

Clad in 4.25 million pounds of raw copper – the inspiration for the development’s name – the 41- and 48-storey towers offer a total of 761 residences, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments and featuring over 300 unique layouts. Current pricing begins at $3,200 per month for studios, $4,500 for one-bedroom residences and $6,650 per month for two-bedrooms residences. The three-bedroom residences, including a limited collection of penthouses with dramatic open-air loggias, are not yet available.

Each tower features a grand lobby with 25-foot ceilings that overlooks a new landscaped park and fountain on the property. A private porte cochère provides access to secure on-site parking with valet service, and the underground parking reception offers residents a private and direct connection to the building’s lobbies.

Inside, the residences are punctuated with large floor-to-ceiling windows that command striking views of the Empire State Building, East River and Manhattan skyline. All residences boast ceiling heights up to 9’7”, oak flooring, custom light fixtures, Bosch washers and dryers and Nest learning thermostat systems. Custom-crafted kitchens are equipped with Miele appliances and feature marble countertops and backsplashes. Bathrooms have signature “Crocodile” marble accent shower walls, antique brass detailing and full-length built-in medicine cabinets.

Residents will have access to more than 60,000 sq ft of amenities. In addition to connecting the two towers, the 100-ft-long skybridge encompasses a full suite of amenities, including a 75-ft indoor lap pool and Whirlpool hot tub at the 28th floor and a fully furnished residents’ bar and lounge at the 29th floor. Adjacent to the skybridge are a double-height fitness centre managed by La Palestra with a rock-climbing wall and skyline views, a Turkish-style marble hammam with plunge pool, yoga and dynamic movement studios, private spa with treatment rooms, catering kitchen, juice bar, flexible studio space and a children’s playroom. The rooftop of the East Tower boasts an infinity-edge swimming pool with outdoor shower, a landscaped sky bar, open-air lounge and dining and grilling areas.
