The first internationally designed mixed-use centre in the city, Shantou Suning Plaza sets the bar for future growth
Shantou Suning Plaza is a vibrant flagship destination designed by MG2 to activate the port city of Shantou in the Guangdong Province of China. Located in the city’s commercial district, the mixed-use development’s retail podium features a multitude of coveted domestic and international brands.
Organic curves contour the interior six levels of the shopping centre, offering a contrast to the geometric shapes prevalent in the building’s exterior. The undulating balconies delineate vertical space and introduce a sense of playfulness into the clean, minimalist concourse.
The materiality throughout the shopping centre’s interior architecture elevates the atmosphere to the level of sophistication exhibited by its high-end retail tenants. The strategic use of reflective surfaces captures the surrounding environment and emphasizes the individuality of tenants’ storefront designs.
LED screens wrap around the building’s façade, enthralling the public with curated content. The positioning of a glass atrium at the main northwest entrance serves as a point of engagement along the streetscape while the action happening behind the transparent curtain of walls creates intrigue amongst pedestrians.
Two 26-storey towers comprised of Class A office space emerge from dual sides of the shopping centre. The strategic positioning shades the retail podium throughout the morning, helping minimize heat gain throughout the day.
The towers’ sleek design are juxtaposed against a lush rooftop garden and an open central court. These areas serve as havens for shoppers looking for entertainment or to take part in community gatherings.
